BEST PRACTICE

Q

If we have two datasets in Excel .xls-format, one containing measured hourly values of NO2 in one point and the other containing modeled values of NO2 in the same point, is our data OK with DELTA? Some other software also reads Excel datasets.

A

You first need to convert your excel files in csv format. The file containing NO2 modelled data then must be converted in netcdf format. The format is explained in detail in the userguide. A tool for converting your modelled csv files in netcdf can be found in the utilities section

Q

Could you give me an estimate of the likely amount of effort, in man days, needed to test/use the benchmarking tool? We will be using this estimate to ask our environment ministry (DEFRA) for the necessary support to carry out the work.

A

The CPU time mainly depends on the number of monitoring stations and models in the dataset as well as on the choice of the multiple option analysis. An estimate has been performed for the POMI dataset and can be found in the User Guide.

TOOL INSTALLATION

Q

I have registered as a new user to IDL and got an email with verification code, however I wasn't able to download because the access is denied. Is this software free?

A

After you receive your verification code from ITT, there is one additional step to complete your web account access. You need to click on a link the ITT will send to you by email. Something like:
http://www.ittvis.com/default.aspx?ctl=Login&username=yyyyyyyyyyy&verificationcode=xxxxxxxxx

After you do this, you will receive notification of your account approval within the next business day.

<< Your ITT Visual Information Solutions web account has been approved.

To access your web account on www.ittvis.com, select Login from the upper lefthand corner. You will then be prompted to enter the username and password listed below. Keep this information in a secure location for future reference.

Q

I have downloaded POMI.rar file and unpacked it (I am working on Linux) but I do not see any folders inside.

A

when you open the .rar file, you actually should see all folders. I think this happens to you because you're using a Linux machine? I suggest you to try to download everything on a Windows PC. The virtual machine, as mentioned in the instructions of the web site, is for a Windows environment and it has not been tested on Linux PCs yet.

ERROR MESSAGES

Q

I tried to visualize a scatter plot in the POMI dataset with the following options:

O3, scatter, MINNI, 2005, all stations, summer

and i get the following error message: Tag name XYS is undefined for structure RESULT. Please consult the supplier of the application.

R

This is due to a bug in DELTA version 1.0. The bug has been fixed in version 1.1

Q

I got the following warning message on the screen:

“Error occurred with the Analysis/Data selection. Check log file (you need to close application). Hint: make sure that parameter is selected before station”.

what should i do?

A

When you select a parameter (i.e. O3) in the "data selection" window, all stations measuring that pollutant automatically appear in the "avaialble" section. you select those stations you want and put them in the "selected" section. But then, if you move to another parameter, such as PM10, these "O3 stations" are still memorized in the "selected" section. you FIRST need to remove them all in the "selected" window and reload them.
Otherwise there the chance that you select a station which measures O3 but not PM10 na dthe software gives an error. Note that the same warning also appears if the user tries to visualize a non-allowed combination of parameters (e.g. selection of a parameter (e.g. NO2) not available in the modeling file (e.g. a meteorological model).
